From 6th July 2022 all new cars, vans, trucks and buses manufacturered in Europe will need to be fitted with an Intelligent Speed Assistant or ISA system, a device that will detect the maximum speed limit using GPS or traffic sign recognition cameras.
The system will send a warning to the driver, and the limit the speed to that detected. It must be stressed that the driver continues to have responsibility for adhering to the speed limits.
Many manufacturers have already begun to include factory-fitted ISA systems in vehicles. The annoyance of warning signals for the driver has been highlighted by some bodies resulting in manufacturers having four options available for the type of alert to be used. The effectiveness of the different types of signal will be assessed in December 2025.
