Medical driving licence application decision delays

23 May 2022

The question ‘where’s my driving licence’ accompanied by stories of the delays experienced by drivers, including profession drivers is all to familiar.  Some drivers are concerned as to their ability to drive whilst awaiting the receipt of their licence as they are unclear of the DVLA guidelines.

With 203,890 applications awaiting a decision in March 2021 increased by 65% to 336,759 in the year to March 2022, DVLA aims to reach a target for 90% of medical applications to be turned around within 90 days by the end of September this year.

Delays have inevitably been caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the pausing of referrals requested by the Department of Health and Social Care to allow the NHS booster delivery, with 58 days of industrial action which included the drivers medical department adding to the mix.

Reports of medical licences being received are trickling through, but DVLA is urging people not to contact them for updates as they will be contacted as soon as information from GPs allowing a decision to be made has been received.
