Driving licences after transition period

23 Dec 2020

The Department for Transport has confirmed that after the end of the transition period on 31 December, and after 1st January 2021, all EU states have agreed to recognise the current UK Photocard driving licence.  Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein will also continue to recognise the UK Photocard driving licence.

Therefore an International Driving Permit will not be required.

The old paper based licences however, or licences issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man will not be recognised and an IDP will be required.
